Temporal Flexibility in Business Process Outsourcing Industry: Organization of Work/Non-Work around Time Zone Dependent Work Schedules in a Gendered Cultural Context

Offshoring business processes to low-cost locations around the globe has made temporal flexibility a pervasive feature in work lives of young workers global South countries like Sri Lanka as it requires them on time zone dependent (TZD) basis. In an environment where great resignation broadened discourse and work-life balance while pandemic-induced economic crisis urging Asian businesses return purely physical pre–Covid-19 legacy processes, this article explores under-researched social consequences organization non-work non-standard schedules, how Lankan TZD experience manage those consequences. Data was gathered from in-depth interviews with Lanka. The findings reveal that reflects colonization by capital Western countries. Though unexpected, interposed transitions are inevitable work, male female differently due reinforcement prevailing gender cultural stereotypes Despite significant de-synchronization resulting colonization, have rearticulated way they produce their life more ‘inward’ approach—facilitated homelike created at workplace.
